Visa Requirements for UK Citizens
ESTA, eTA, and Mexico tourist card requirements for UK passport holders travelling to the 2026 international football tournament.
Last updated: May 2026
Entry requirements can change. Always check the official government websites before travel: UK Government travel advice (gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice), US ESTA (esta.cbp.dhs.gov), Canada eTA (canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship), and the relevant host country embassy. Urgent Note for June Travellers
If you are travelling to a June group stage match, apply for your ESTA and/or eTA today. Most applications are approved within 72 hours, but processing can occasionally take longer — and you cannot board your flight without approval in hand. Do not leave this to the day before departure.
- USA ESTA: Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Cost: US$21.
- Canada eTA: Apply at canada.ca/eta. Cost: CAD$7 (~£4).
- Mexico: No pre-travel visa or authorisation required for UK citizens.
United States — ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization)
Who Needs an ESTA?
All UK citizens entering the United States for tourist or business purposes of up to 90 days must have a valid ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This includes transit through US airports en route to another destination.
How to Apply — Step by Step
- Go to the official ESTA website only: esta.cbp.dhs.gov. This is the only legitimate US government ESTA portal. The ".gov" domain is your guarantee of authenticity.
- Create an account or apply as a guest.
- Enter your UK passport details exactly as they appear in your passport — errors can cause your application to be denied or require correction at the airport.
- Answer the eligibility questions honestly. Answering "yes" to certain questions (such as criminal convictions) does not automatically mean denial, but you may need a full visa appointment at the US Embassy in London instead.
- Pay the US$21 fee by credit or debit card.
- Submit and note your application reference number.
Processing Times
Most ESTA applications receive one of three responses:
- Authorisation Approved — typically within 72 hours, often within minutes.
- Authorisation Pending — may take up to 72 hours. Check back using your reference number.
- Travel Not Authorised — you will need to apply for a full US visa at the US Embassy in London. Do this urgently if you have upcoming travel booked.
Apply at least 72 hours before your flight. Do not book non-refundable flights without a valid ESTA or confirmed US visa.
What Your ESTA Covers
- Valid for 2 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
- Allows multiple entries — if you leave and return within the 2-year validity period, you do not need a new ESTA.
- Permits stays of up to 90 days per visit.
- Does not allow you to work in the USA or extend your stay beyond 90 days.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using a third-party site: Dozens of unofficial sites charge £50–150 to submit ESTA applications on your behalf. The process takes 10 minutes and costs US$21 on the official site. Only use esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
- Passport number errors: Your ESTA is tied to your specific passport number. If you renew your passport after obtaining an ESTA, you need a new ESTA — even if the old one is still within its 2-year validity.
- Not checking an existing ESTA: If you travelled to the USA previously, log in to check your ESTA is still valid. Many people assume it has carried over when it has already expired.
- Previous travel to certain countries: If you have travelled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen after 1 March 2011 (or hold dual nationality with any of these countries), you are no longer eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and must apply for a full US visa.
- Criminal convictions: Even minor or spent convictions can affect VWP eligibility. When in doubt, apply for a visa rather than risk being turned away at the airport.
If Your ESTA Is Denied
Contact the US Embassy in London immediately to schedule a visa appointment. Given tournament travel timelines, act urgently. A Tier B nonimmigrant visa appointment may take several weeks.
Canada — eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
Who Needs an eTA?
UK citizens flying to Canada (Toronto or Vancouver for tournament matches) need a valid eTA. The eTA is not required if entering Canada by land or sea from the USA — for example, driving from Seattle to Vancouver or crossing at Niagara Falls. For those overland journeys, your passport is sufficient.
How to Apply — Step by Step
- Visit the official Government of Canada eTA site: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/eta.html
- Click "Apply now" — the form takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
- Enter your UK passport details precisely.
- Pay CAD$7 (approximately £4). The fee is minimal — beware third-party sites charging significantly more for the same application.
- Submit and receive your eTA confirmation by email.
What Your eTA Covers
- Valid for 5 years from the date of issue, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
- Electronically linked to your passport — you do not need to print or carry any certificate; border agents see it automatically.
- Permits stays of up to 6 months per entry.
- Allows multiple entries within the validity period.
Common Issues
- eTA must match your travel passport: If you hold multiple passports or renew your passport after applying, you need a new eTA linked to the new document.
- Processing time: The vast majority of eTAs are approved within minutes. Occasionally applications require additional review, which can take up to 72 hours.
- Land border re-entry to the USA: If you cross from Canada into the USA by land, you will need your ESTA for US re-entry as normal.
Mexico — No Visa Required
Entry Requirements for UK Citizens
UK passport holders do not need a visa to visit Mexico for tourist stays of up to 180 days. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood points among UK travellers — Mexico is a straightforward destination for British passports.
The FMM — Forma Migratoria Multiple
When you arrive in Mexico, you will receive a Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) — a simple tourist card that serves as your official authorisation to remain in Mexico as a visitor.
- How you receive it: Usually distributed on your flight by the cabin crew, or available at immigration desks on arrival at the airport.
- Digital FMM: Some airlines now offer pre-completion of the FMM form online before departure. Check with your airline when you check in.
- Keep your FMM safe: You will surrender it when you depart Mexico. If you lose it, you can request a replacement at any immigration office (Instituto Nacional de Migración), though this can cause delays at departure.
- Length of permitted stay: Typically 180 days for tourist purposes. The immigration officer may stamp a shorter duration — if your trip requires the full 180 days, you can politely ask for the maximum at the desk.
- No fee applies for tourist entry.
At Mexican Immigration
Expect a short queue and standard questions: purpose of visit (tourism/football), accommodation address, and length of stay. Have your hotel or Airbnb address written down if your Spanish is limited. Officials at major international airports (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey) typically speak some English.
Multi-Country Travel
Many fans will visit more than one host country — particularly England fans who follow the team through the group stage and then into knockouts. Here is what you need at each crossing:
| Journey | Document Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UK → USA (by air) | Valid ESTA + UK passport | Apply before departure |
| UK → Canada (by air) | Valid eTA + UK passport | Apply before departure |
| UK → Mexico (by air) | UK passport only | FMM issued on arrival |
| USA → Canada (by air) | eTA + UK passport | eTA required for all air entries |
| USA → Canada (by land) | UK passport only | No eTA needed for land crossings |
| Canada → USA (by air or land) | ESTA + UK passport | ESTA required for re-entry to USA |
| USA → Mexico (by air or land) | UK passport only | FMM issued on arrival in Mexico |
| Mexico → USA (by air or land) | ESTA + UK passport | ESTA required for US entry |
Important: NEXUS, Global Entry, and TSA PreCheck are US/Canadian trusted traveller programmes designed for residents — they are not relevant for UK tourists attending the tournament.
Tip for England fans: If you are planning to follow England match-by-match and may cross between the USA, Canada, and Mexico, sort all your travel authorisations (ESTA, eTA) before your first match. You do not want to be scrambling for documentation mid-tournament.
Passport Requirements
Validity Rules by Country
| Country | Minimum Passport Validity Required |
|---|---|
| USA | Valid for the duration of your stay (no 6-month rule for UK VWP travellers) |
| Canada | Valid for the duration of your stay |
| Mexico | Valid for the duration of your stay |
There is no formal "must be valid for 6 months beyond travel" rule for UK passports at any of the three host countries under standard tourist entry. However:
- Airlines may apply their own stricter rules. Some carriers require 6 months' validity as a condition of boarding, regardless of destination country requirements. Check with your airline before travel.
- It is always advisable to renew well in advance. A nearly-expired passport adds unnecessary risk to international travel.
Emergency Passport Renewal
If your passport expires before or during the tournament:
- The HM Passport Office offers an urgent (fast track) service via in-person appointments at passport offices in London, Liverpool, Newport, Glasgow, Peterborough, and Belfast. Book at gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently.
- Turnaround for urgent appointments is typically 1 week. The premium online (check-and-send) service takes approximately 3 weeks — this is now too slow for June fixtures.
- Do not book non-refundable flights until you hold a valid renewed passport.
Travel Insurance and Health
GHIC Does Not Cover the USA or Canada
This is the number one error made by UK travellers to North America. The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) — the post-Brexit replacement for the EHIC — covers NHS-equivalent healthcare in EU member states and a small number of partner countries. It has no validity in the USA, Canada, or Mexico.
US healthcare costs are among the highest in the world. A single night in a US hospital can cost £10,000–£30,000 without insurance. An emergency medical evacuation home can cost six figures. Comprehensive travel insurance is not optional for any North America trip.
What your travel insurance must cover for USA travel:
- Medical expenses: minimum £2 million (most reputable policies offer £5–10 million)
- Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
- Personal liability
- Cancellation and curtailment
- Lost or stolen documents (including passport and match tickets)
Buy insurance the moment you book your flights. This ensures cancellation cover applies from the booking date — not just from the date you purchase the policy.
Canada's healthcare is lower cost than the USA but still significant for foreign visitors. Mexico's costs are lower again. A single comprehensive policy typically covers all three countries.
Children and Minors
- UK children need their own passport regardless of age. Children cannot be added to a parent's passport under current UK rules — each child requires their own separate document.
- ESTAs for children: Every child travelling to the USA needs their own ESTA, including infants. The application process is identical; a parent or guardian completes it on the child's behalf.
- eTAs for children: Each child travelling to Canada by air needs their own eTA, linked to their own passport.
- Mexico: No additional pre-travel documentation beyond a valid passport is required for children.
- Solo parents travelling with children: Both the USA and Canada may ask for documentation when one parent is travelling alone with a child who has a different surname. A letter of consent from the absent parent is strongly recommended — notarised if possible. This is particularly important if your surname differs from your child's.
- Children in Mexico: Solo parents should carry the same consent letter as recommended for the USA and Canada. Families with matching surnames rarely encounter issues.
